Shere, Gomshall and Peaslake Local History Society
Shere and Gomshall Local History Society was inaugurated on the 19th August 1971. This was in response to a meeting the previous February at which representatives of the Surrey Local History Council told of their efforts to set up local history groups to 'further knowledge, do research and record findings'.
Peaslake was added to the title in November 1977. It was suggested that the group could 'look at the rafters of your house, the stones of your church, the shrubs in your hedge and the names of your fields and lanes'. The new Society set up three groups: to study Houses, Folk Memories and Documents.
By August 1972 the Folk Memories group had done enough work to set up an exhibition in Shere School. Since then, the Society has continued to build on the example of its Founders. It holds regular members' meetings, arranges outings, cares for its archives and does research.
The pictures at the top of the page show three houses from the villages, and the Lutyens lych gate to St James' Church, Shere.
